How a Remodeling Project Works: From First Call to 12-Month Check-Up

Viktor and the HHI crew in company polos

Who this is for: Bismarck-Mandan homeowners who are close to calling a contractor and want to know what happens next, and when they pay.

Starting a remodel goes smoother when you know the sequence before you pick up the phone. Below is how a project runs with Hugo Home Improvement, what we commit to at each step, and what you can do to prepare. If you're still comparing companies, read our guide on how to hire a general contractor first.

The process at a glance

Every project follows the same six steps, whether it's a shower, a basement or new flooring:

  1. You call, text or send the form, and our office follows up during business hours.
  2. We visit for a free in-home consultation.
  3. You get a written estimate with price, timeline, warranty and material options.
  4. We confirm design and material selections before anything is ordered.
  5. Our team runs the installation, with dust control and a clear rule for hidden damage.
  6. We do a final walkthrough, your warranty starts, and we come back for a 12-month check-up.

We're a remodeling contractor serving Bismarck and Mandan, plus Burleigh and Morton counties. Projects in other nearby towns are reviewed case by case.

Step 1. Call, text or send the form

Call or text Viktor at (701) 329-9659 with your town, photos and what you want to change. Our office follows up during business hours to discuss the next step, and Viktor arranges the visit.

You don't need a finished plan. "A safer bathroom" or "more space downstairs" is enough to start. It helps to include the type of project, your address, a rough timeline, a few photos and anything that worries you, like an old leak or a soft floor. When you're ready, request a free in-home estimate.

Step 2. Free in-home consultation

We come to your home, look at the space, take measurements and talk through what you want. There's no obligation and no pressure to sign. Viktor, our general contractor, stays your contact for scope and price after you sign.

To get the most out of the visit, have these ready:

  • Photos or screenshots of styles you like
  • Your must-haves and nice-to-haves
  • A budget range, even a rough one
  • Dates that matter: holidays, guests, travel
  • Known problems: past leaks, damp spots, cracks, soft floors
  • Practical details: pets, parking, where materials can be staged

Step 3. Written estimate: price, timeline, warranty, options

After the visit, you get a written estimate that shows pricing, a project timeline, warranty details and material options. It lists what's included and what isn't, so you can compare it line by line with any other bid.

Start dates depend on the season, our current schedule and material lead times. After the walkthrough (or from good photos), we give you realistic timeline options and the soonest available start window. We won't promise a date we can't keep.

Step 4. Design and material selections

We help you choose layouts, finishes and fixtures that fit your budget and style, and we confirm every selection with you before ordering. Locking choices in early matters because some items take time. Special-order tile and fixtures have lead times, and glass shower enclosures are usually measured only after the tile is finished.

Changing your mind after materials are ordered is possible, but it can move both the price and the schedule. That's why we settle selections in this step, not during demolition.

Step 5. Installation: crew, dust control, cleanup, hidden damage

HHI coordinates the work, and your estimate states who handles specialty trades such as plumbing and electrical. Our employees are covered through North Dakota Workforce Safety & Insurance (WSI). Yurii, our Job Supervisor, or Don, our Foreman, runs the work on site as assigned, and Cyrene, our Office Manager, helps with scheduling and paperwork. We agree on how often you get text and photo updates at the start.

Here's what to expect while we're working in your home:

  • Dust control: plastic barriers, ventilation and cleanup routines to keep the rest of the house livable.
  • Cleanup and changes in writing: before demolition, we agree on the work area, access, cleanup, pets and bathroom availability. Any repair or change outside the written scope is priced and approved by you in writing before we continue.
  • Hidden damage: if we find water damage, rot or framing problems behind walls or floors, we stop, show you, explain your options and price it clearly before proceeding.
  • Permits and inspections: if your project needs permits, we tell you up front. In Bismarck, remodels, basement finishes, electrical, plumbing and HVAC work require permits, and the city requires a final inspection once the project is complete.

Most people live at home during a remodel. If it's your only bathroom, tell us before we schedule. We'll discuss which nights the toilet or shower may be unavailable and what must be ready before demolition.

Step 6. Walkthrough, warranty activation, 12-month check-up

When the work is done, we walk through the project with you, check every detail and finish any punch-list items. Then your warranty starts, and we put your free check-up on the schedule.

Your project comes with a one-year workmanship warranty and a free 12-month check-up; product coverage depends on the manufacturer and the item installed. About a year later, we contact you to schedule the check-up, so the work is looked at after a full cycle of North Dakota seasons. Read the details of our warranty and 12-month check-up.

How payments work

Most projects start with a deposit that holds your place on the schedule and covers materials ordered for your job. The deposit, what it covers and when the rest is due are written into your estimate, so you know them before you sign.

On one 450-square-foot flooring estimate, that meant 50% to book the job and 50% at completion; larger, multi-stage jobs follow the payment schedule in the contract. Ask the office which payment methods and fees apply to your invoice. If you'd rather spread out the cost, you can compare personalized home improvement loan offers through Acorn Finance. Qualified applicants may see offers from $1,000 to $100,000. The lender sets your rate and repayment term. Checking initial offers uses a soft credit inquiry; moving forward may affect your credit score. The lender's payment schedule is separate from ours.

Frequently asked questions

What happens after I contact a remodeling contractor?

With us, you start by calling or texting Viktor with your town, photos and what you want to change. Our office follows up during business hours, then we schedule a free in-home consultation to see the space and talk through your goals. After that visit, you receive a written estimate with price, timeline, warranty and material options. Nothing is ordered until you've approved the estimate and your selections.

How soon can you start my project?

It depends on the season, our current schedule and material lead times. After a quick walkthrough or a look at your photos, we give you realistic timeline options and the soonest available start window. We schedule interior remodels like showers and basements throughout the year.

How do estimates and payments work?

You get a clear written estimate that lists what's included and excluded. Your estimate states the deposit, any milestones and the final balance; the deposit is usually 50%, with the rest at completion or on a written milestone schedule. We go over the amounts and timing with you before you sign anything.

What if you find hidden damage?

If we find water damage, rot or framing problems behind walls or floors, we stop and show you what we found. We explain your options and give you a clear price before doing any extra work. Nothing extra is added to your bill without your approval.

Will my home be dusty?

Demolition always makes some dust, but we contain it with plastic barriers, ventilation and cleanup routines so the rest of your home stays livable. If you have pets, kids or allergies, mention it at the consultation so the work area and access can be planned around them.
