How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take? A Realistic Timeline
Who this is for: Bismarck-Mandan households with one or two bathrooms who need to know how long they'll be without one, and what makes a remodel run long.
Short answer
A straightforward prefab shower conversion takes about 2–3 working days once materials are on site, and a broader tub-to-shower conversion about 3–7 working days as a planning guide. A full bathroom takes longer, and no single number fits every job. Where your project lands depends on the scope, how complex the tile is, whether plumbing moves and whether anything is special-ordered. We confirm the work schedule and first-use date for your bathroom before demolition. The clock that surprises most people starts earlier: choosing and ordering materials before day one.
Timeline at a glance
A full bathroom remodel moves through the same phases in the same order every time. Here's what happens in each one and whether you can use the room.
| Phase | What happens | How long | Can you use the bathroom? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selections and ordering | Tile, vanity, fixtures and glass style are chosen and confirmed, then ordered | Depends on lead times; special orders take longest | Yes, nothing has started |
| Protection and demolition | Floors covered, dust barriers up, old fixtures, tile and wallboard removed | Set in your schedule | No |
| Rough plumbing and electrical | Drain, valve, supply lines, fan, lights and outlets replaced or moved | Depends on what moves, plus the inspection | No |
| Rough-in inspection | The city checks plumbing or electrical work before walls close, where required | Depends on inspection scheduling | No |
| Repairs, blocking and backer board | Damage found in demo is fixed; blocking for grab bars; new wall and floor boards | Depends on what demo uncovers | No |
| Waterproofing | Membrane on shower walls and floor, left to cure before tile goes on | Set by the manufacturer's cure times | No |
| Tile and grout | Floor, wall and shower tile, then grout | Usually the longest phase | No |
| Vanity, toilet, fixtures and paint | Vanity and top, toilet, trim, accessories, paint and touch-ups | After tile is done | Partly, once the toilet is back in; we discuss before demolition which nights it may be out |
| Glass and final walkthrough | Glass measured after tile, installed when it arrives; final inspection and walkthrough | Glass follows tile; it is made after measuring, which adds lead time | Yes, once the shower is cleared for use |
Your written estimate should show this sequence with dates for your project. When you're ready to plan a full bathroom remodel, we'll walk through each phase with you before anything is ordered.
Before day one: selections and special orders
The most common delay happens before demolition: a tile, vanity or fixture that isn't in stock. If one item arrives late, the whole sequence waits for it, because each phase depends on the one before. That's why we help you choose layouts, finishes and fixtures up front and confirm every selection before ordering.
Start dates depend on the season, our current schedule and material lead times. After a walkthrough or a few photos, we'll give you realistic timeline options and the soonest available start window. We confirm the start date when you sign.
Permits and inspections in Bismarck and Mandan
Permits rarely slow down a bathroom remodel in Bismarck. The city's list of projects that require a permit includes remodels, plumbing, electrical and HVAC work, and the city's building inspections FAQ says permits other than commercial and drainfield permits can be issued within one business day. The same FAQ says no inspection is needed before drywall is taped, but a final inspection is required when the project is complete, and that work done without required permits can affect insurability and resale.
In Mandan, permits go through the city's Permitting service; the Building Department is at (701) 667-3230. Outside city limits, the permitting office depends on the address. Tell us the property address. We identify the permitting office, discuss the required inspections, and state who will file and who pays the fees in your written scope.
If your home was built before 1978, ask about lead-safe work practices. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires anyone paid to disturb paint in pre-1978 homes to be certified and to follow lead-safe practices, which adds setup and cleanup steps.
What adds days
Most delays come from the same short list:
- Hidden damage. Rot, mold or a slow leak found during demolition. We stop, show you, explain the options and price the repair before going further.
- Layout changes. Moving a toilet, shower drain or vanity means more plumbing work and often more inspection time.
- Special-order items. Custom vanities, imported tile and specialty fixtures.
- Custom glass. It can't be measured until the tile is finished.
- Change orders. A new tile choice or an added niche after work starts can reset part of the sequence.
- Complex tile. Small mosaics, patterns and full-height tile take longer than large tile in a straight layout.
Shower-only vs. full remodel
If the shower is the only thing that's failing, you may not need a full remodel. A shower-only project skips the vanity, toilet, flooring and paint, which is why it typically takes days instead of weeks (about 2–3 working days for a straightforward prefab conversion once materials are on site, and about 3–7 for a broader conversion). If the rest of the room is in decent shape, it can make sense to replace just the shower and leave the rest for later.
A full remodel makes more sense when the floor is damaged, the layout doesn't work, or the fan, vanity and lighting all need replacing anyway. Doing it all at once avoids tearing into finished work twice.
Living with one bathroom during the work
If it's your only bathroom, tell us at the first visit so we can plan around it. A few things help:
- Plan a backup shower for the weeks the shower is out: a gym, family nearby, or a neighbor.
- Ask about the toilet. In a one-bathroom house, when it goes back in matters more than anything else in the schedule. If it is your only bathroom, tell us before we schedule. We'll discuss which nights the toilet or shower may be unavailable and what must be ready before demolition.
- Expect dust control, not zero dust. Before demolition we agree with you on dust barriers, path protection and cleanup.
- Expect short water shut-offs while plumbing is reworked. We'll tell you when.
- Keep pets and kids away from the work area during demolition.
Bathroom remodeling is indoor work, so it runs through a North Dakota winter like any other season.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a small bathroom remodel take?
A small bathroom still goes through every phase: demolition, rough plumbing, waterproofing, tile, fixtures and glass. Less tile area shortens the tile phase, but drying, inspection and glass lead times don't shrink with the room. We confirm the schedule for your bathroom before demolition.
How long does it take to remodel just a shower?
A straightforward prefab conversion takes about 2–3 working days once materials are on site; a broader tub conversion takes about 3–7 working days as a planning guide. Custom tile and moving the drain take longer. Glass is measured after the tile is finished, so the door or panel may go in a little later than the rest.
Can I use my bathroom during the remodel?
Not the shower, from demolition until the waterproofing, tile and grout are finished. The toilet may be usable for part of the project, depending on the scope. Ask your contractor which days the room is completely out of service, and plan a backup for those days.
